Facebook

We all know how Facebook is an integral part of our daily lives. We use it to define ourselves. When something big happens, we tell others by updating our status. However something happened yesterday that made me realize Facebook is defining us. I work at a gas station. Yesterday there was a woman in the store sobbing about her crumbling relationship. She told her friend, “I am ending it tomorrow, I will update my Facebook and change it to single.” Her friend replied, “He already broke up with you, look at his page.” She held up her iPhone showing his single status. She called her boyfriend and put him on speaker phone so her friend could hear. He said, “can’t you read bitch we are done.”  The first thing the friend said was, “we will tell everyone what a dick he is on Facebook.”

This made me realize something, this is what we all do. I have a friend who is “on a break” with her girlfriend. She said she kept her status as in a relationship because they are just on a break. A few days later she met someone else and changed her relationship status to be blank. I have another friend whose husband left for “a break.” However he soon changed his status from married to in a relationship… with another woman’s name. That is how she found out. All of this makes me realize what a profound impact Facebook has had on our lives. Their are no more Dear John letters, just status changes. Facebook has truly changed us.
